He remembered that there were different shots. The truth of the matter is that Jean-Claude had done a film called No Retreat, No Surrender. And the two of them, they didn't talk about it, but they'd basically bicker through their agents because neither one wanted to be the criminal who gets killed at the end. What follows is a conversation with Frank Dux, who was the real-life inspiration behind the movie Bloodsport. There had been a few other plays dealing with the military and Vietnam at the time, but they weren't written by those who had actually been there. That it would be helpful and therapeutic.Blake Harris: And was it? And the receipt was dated 1982, okay? That this guy looks just like me and we should suggest it to Mark DiSalle. He taught at the Nakano spy school in Japan. It was a no-budget. You allow other people just a little glimpse into what that experience was like and to feel it themselves. Not about Jean-Claude per se, but about releasing Bloodsport in theaters?Sheldon Lettich: Menahem was persuaded by Samuel Hadida, who had released No Retreat, No Surrender in France (where it was called Karate Tiger) and been a fan of Jean-Claude's ever since then. What I said to them [the LA Times] was that the only way you could get a hold of my records was to go to Federal Intelligence Court. As a result, he's spent the past 28 years dealing with perpetual allegations of being a fake and a fraud. And he knows it. Released in theaters 35 years ago, on Feb. 26, 1988, Bloodsport starred Van Damme as Frank Dux, a U.S. Army soldier who leaves the military to enter a fight-to-the-death martial arts tournament in . So when he heard that there was another movie with Van Dammeand this time Van Damme was starring in itSammy was totally enthusiastic. And he's in this movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. One contribution I made to that script though was suggesting to Jean-Claude that he set the story in the past. ).Blake Harris: That's great. Although there is no convenient way to verify each and every detail connected with this story, the editors have verified enough of the basic facts to feel confident in publishing it. So we had no budget on that movie and we did a great job. Frank and I did write a couple of scripts together, and he received credit on both of them. Like with Legionnaire. These guys, after brutally going at each other, now they were just laughing it off. with Andy Griffith, where Barney Fife was getting picked on and so he goes to learn judo. And what really grabbed Sheldon's attention was the fights.Blake Harris: So what happened with the script? He had a karate background. Double Impact was financed, mostly, through pre-sales and, as it was structured, each of those companies also own a piece of the movie. I genuinely believed that he believes everything he told me.Sheldon Lettich: I'd tend to agree with you on that. With Bloodsport and Deadshot picking up each other weapons in battle. I wasn't there. And the CIA and everyone is obligated to tell you? One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux. It wasn't until they allowed Jean-Claude to go in and recut the film that everything came together and it worked. Jean-Claude was a big Stallone fan?Sheldon Lettich: Still is. And we loved each other at that point.Blake Harris: So you guys were really closeFrank Dux: Yeah, this'll show you how close we were and tie back to what I was saying right before. We even made a movie together, my 16mm short Firefight, which I gave him a major role in. They were going to do a movie called Night of the Leopard but there were some problems with getting the script so now they needed a new one. I thought Bloodsport was going to ruin my career when it was first cut and put together. What I had done was I had the fight, like in Bloodsport, but there was one little caveat difference: In between doing these fights, he was also doing stuff to help people on the street. He would punch the bricks, breaking them apart. Was Sheldon the first person you shared it with?Frank Dux: Well, it was supposed to be a series. Does that even look the same? We probably fought for a good 5-10 minutes before getting split up. Took me a long, long time to write that script. Jean-Claude is poison!! Kurt had played football at Prairie View College in the 60's. Because for years he would turn down roles if his character had to be defeated at the end. So I go in to pitch my idea and his development executive, she was just flabbergasted when I showed her the magazine cover and told her about the idea. Released in 1988, Bloodsport tells the story of Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a captain in the U.S. Army and an experienced martial artist, who ignores his superiors and competes in an illegal martial arts tournament in Hong Kong. I mean, I didn't really see it myself, but I heard it from Grant later. It was just a way to release it. And so the ink was barely dry when I drove right over to Moshe's house and we signed a deal to do what became Double Impact.Blake Harris: From a technological standpoint, what were some of the biggest challenges with shooting two Jean-Claudes?Sheldon Lettich: The biggest challenges were that we were still using old technology. That's bullshit, that's total bullshit.Blake Harris: What about those claims regarding your covert military background? Dux aped the premise behind Enter the Dragon, then claimed it as true. You want to fight, let's fight?" KUMITE! Apparently, Stallone had read the same article and he was thinking exactly the same thing. In a recent documentary, Admiral Horton Smith not only acknowledges that I was a covert operative, but also states that any record of mine would have to come out of the Federal Intelligence Court. That is not to say that the Tanaka name has no meaning. He tells one where he says he met Menahem Golan [a producer on Bloodsport] at a restaurant and [Van Damme] threw out his legs and blah blah blah. When I heard that name, it was like bells started ringing. [laughing] Those old 80s trailers, that's what they'd say over and over again. The uniform they had for Jean-Claude was silk pajamas, these Chinese silk pajamas. One of the key sequences in the film finds Task Force X sent to free Rick Flag from an enemy camp. This is like 1979 and he wanted to put together some kind of theatrical piece about Vietnam veterans. "Well, can I show you what I've learned since you taught me?" California, Oregon and Washington. To turn it into a TV series. How much of the story really happened? We thought he was f***ing great. I also remember seeing something on Mayberry R.F.D. And we made money on that film. And he ends up doing a test of speed with this guy named Vic Moore. Oh man, he f***ing hated that movie. He's got a lot of abilities. In Enter the Ninja, I didn't use my real name. There's an authenticity to it.Blake Harris: Speaking of authenticity, I was wondering how much of the movie is accurate to your own life experiences?Frank Dux: Well the fighting scenes were very accurate. He felt bad for him. Despite mixed reviews from critics, it was a considerable box office success, grossing $50 million on a budget of $1.5-2.3 million. That's kind of how it appealed to me. Why don't you go check it out?" Joseph Papp heard about it, so he brought the show to the Public Theatre in New York. People don't really know that about Lee, but he had one leg shorter than the other. I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. It's the amazing tale of Frank Dux, a Caucasian martial artist who fought in (and won) a ruthless secret tournament that's held only once every five years. At that point, it was to their advantage. And he just started laughing and he says, "Frank, you're crazy. I mean, he couldn't do a throw. The whole martial arts thing. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. But if they did Bloodsport, then they can do Timecop. Absolutely. And I had to find a way for him to kind of come back in and get his mind out of it. That picture with my hands crossed, you can see Bloodsport in the background. Plus the guy was just an idol of mine. That's not even my name. "The fact that Frank hasn't been involved with any movie since 1994 says something doesn't it? It was horrible. That's how Frank and I met.Blake Harris: Do you remember what your first meeting was like?Sheldon Lettich: We hit it off right away. Stallone's original idea was that [Colonel Sam] Trautman comes to Rambo and says something like: hey, I got a mission for you in Afghanistan. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." Rambo was always a reluctant badass.Sheldon Lettich: Yeah, you've really gotta push him to fight. Except the version that Stallone had in mind was for a present day French Foreign Legion movie about two American buddies who enlist. And I can cite the evidence.Blake Harris: Looking backand considering what eventually happened after the film came outis there anything you could have done differently?Frank Dux: You know, it's part of life. And on it he writes: To the Man Who Beat Me. And Tanaka was well known. That was a term, from England, when they used to fight dogs. He was good at boxing. Enjoy, and please share and subscribe! The ninja school if you want to call it that. Jean-Claude was doing movies for Columbia and they wanted him to bring them some ideas for movies and we brought that idea to them. KUMITE! So I was curious why you think you were so skilled? And Stallone felt the same way. That's the thing. I said, "Real Kumite fighters, we fight here. But Menahem had an in-house fixer named Michael J. Duthie, a really good editor, and he basically re-worked the movie. But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. Or any agent's records? Look, I take people at face value because I'm not a bulls***ter. Is that true?Sheldon Lettich: We were working on a sequel, but I just don't think it's going to go anywhere, unfortunately. You know, Jean-Claude was totally overwhelmed when he got to work with Stallone on Expendables 2. I used my Hebrew name: Benjamin Wolf. So Leon and I go and pitch this to Menahem. So any time you want to know who an agent is you can just go down there and file a request? We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. And at the Invitationals, there's Bruce Lee. But back then it sounded really cool.Blake Harris: Well you started that clich!Sheldon Lettich: [laughter] Back then, to say "based on a true story" was something that intrigued, and I think it particularly intrigued Menahem Golan. The concept of gladiatorial games has its roots in the Etruscans, the predecessors of the Romans. Sometimes we get answers to questions like these, and other times we do not. Menahem says, "Oh, Corsican Brothers, that's perfect for Jean-Claude! And Jean-Claude's phone began ringing off the hook. I believe that story is 100% true, because Michel Qissi was with him and he told me the same story. Not what's typically expected, which was: Jean-Claude's going to find these motherf***ers and beat the s*** out of them. "He's written this Vietnam novel," my agent said, "that the novel's way too long and overwritten. The other thing is that Jean-Claude, like I said, he had this uncanny way he looked. And it was a Xeroxed copy of a receipt, a copy that anyone could fabricate on a home copy machine. So I thought that it was a good idea to keep my options open. All that was missing was an actor to play Frank Dux. And it was painful. Like Bloodsport is one of his best movies ever but it still resulted in a great episode. Enter the Ninja?Sheldon Lettich: No, there was no script prior to the "Bloodsport" script. In honor of How Did This Get Made?'s #Bloodsport episode, we made this #supercut of Jean-Claude Van Damme's super #butt! Though defeated, this wasn't the last the heroes of the DC Universe saw of Bloodsport. And here's the thing that gets me about how stupid people are. None of it.Blake Harris: InterestingFrank Dux: And Shoto Tanemura, he says he's never heard of a Dukes or a Tanaka? I think it was Jean-Claude finally convinced them to allow him to do it. "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? 2. level 2. In this declaration, Commander Martin attests to the following: Frank Dux: As far as my military service goes, I should also mention that I'm named as a source contributor in the US Navy SEAL SPECWAR manual. They'll cover Frank Dux being a real man, Van Damme's soft baby buns, blindfolded tea training, the not so secret illegal Kumite martial-arts tournament, Ray Jackson, and much more. Today on Variant, we give you the comic book. In the DC Extended Universe, Robert DuBois is played by Idris Elba in the . It was going to be a surprise appearance. Well I did, and I landed one right on his nose.Blake Harris: Really?Frank Dux: Yeah, and he was not happy about that. No Retreat No Surrender movie led to Van Damme getting the lead in Bloodsport (1988). KUMITE! Bloodsport was produced by Cannon Films and released by Warner Bros. on 26 February 1988. It chronicles his training by a Japanese master warrior named Tiger [Tanaka]Shoto Tanemura, a Japanese who is one of a select group of recognized Ninja masters in the world, said in an interview in Los Angeles last week that he had never heard of Dux or Tanaka. Like in South America it was called "Vale Tudo" and if the Japanese were running the event it was "Kumite San Soo," so this was a word that described them all.Blake Harris: That's interesting. Frank lost that case. I told Menahem that the new cut of Bloodsport was great and I thought it was going to do really well. They were doing a showing of Bloodsport in a theater in my old home town and I just happened to be visiting. Well, here's the reality of the situation. He used to tell everybody he was a ninja; I think he still maintains he was a ninja and took his training from this guy named Tanaka. And I gotta give him credit there. I imagine it's hard to write a personal, firsthand account like that.Frank Dux: Here's the thing. Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. We needed at least $20 million to do this thing right and it looked like it might happen, but it didn't. Menahem had also seen the little 16mm movie [Firefight] I directed and was going to give me my first directing deal.Blake Harris: For you to direct a Lone Wolf McQuade sequel starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and Chuck Norris?Sheldon Lettich: Yes, except that Chuck didn't want to do it. I thought: Oh shit, I'm going to get my ass handed to me. Over the show's decade-long run, they've covered a lot of. And so we climbed back over the wall and onto the set. That kind of caught my fancy. To my face he's pretending to be my best buddy, but behind my back he's doing everything in his power to undermine me in my career and take credit for my work.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And that's a typical Hollywood story, right? And that's one of the things that were attractive about Rambo so that's what we did with that script.Blake Harris: And what was it like working with Rambo himself?Sheldon Lettich: I was just so honored. They didn't back me up and they never said anything about seeing my fight footage.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And one of the things that people don't realize is that after the Times article came out, people were so willing to convict me, just because it was the Times.Blake Harris: I just have one last question for you: since this whole thing grew, in a way, out of your friendship with Sheldon, I was wondering when was the last time that you spoke with him?Frank Dux: I saw Sheldon, believe it or not, about four weeks ago. He owes you two more movies! He's not very good, of course, but the judo instructor steps in for Barney and then kicks the ass of the guy who's been picking on him. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. So he started taking me to construction sites where I could get work. It was also seen by Viacom. And so we had a great time. I was there at every meeting and, of course, they were getting all the ideas out of me. Blake Harris: That story in the L.A. Times was pretty brutal. Get personalized recommendations, and learn where to watch across hundreds of streaming providers. And it wasn't even for the right trophy. A lot of it was based on the recollections of my friend Kurt Taylor, who I wrote the script with. And we did. We're not friends [anymore] and he does everything in his power to try and paint me as being a nutball or a kook because of it.Blake Harris: That's why I wanted to focus this piece on you, so you can tell the story in your own words.Frank Dux: So now you're starting to hear the real truth of the matter, you know what I mean? I showed him some video footage, and that's how the project started.Blake Harris: Before talking about next steps, I'm curious to hear more about your initial script. I gotta tell you: Seeing it years later, I didn't realize how good it was. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. If he doesn't have any use for people, he throws them to the side. KUMITE! "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja, "All I request," Lettich started off by saying, "is that we try to keep discussion about Frank Dux to a minimum. Do you still believe I that?" So I just started calling it Bloodsport, and that was useful because this type of fighting, it had a different name depending on where you were. So we changed the title to Stryker's Force and we gave the character's different names. And he was an idol of Jean-Claude's too.Blake Harris: Yeah? And that's why I kept it kind of fictional. That's just how funny memory can cloud things. We encountered a few phonies, but eventually we put together a core group. I buy you dinner tonight." In Etruscan society, gladiatorial games were supposed to be part of the funerary rituals honoring the dead. Because my idea for Rambo III was: well, there's only one place Rambo could goAfghanistan. And at one of these construction sites, there was a guy doing martial arts. I had them cut down so it would fit him because I'm a bigger guy. So he pitched me the story for Kickboxer and I said, "Well, if you're looking for a martial arts film, I've got one of my own that I think you might likeBloodsport." I don't think Stallone has ever been given his due by movie critics. So my agent sent him Firebase and he responded very enthusiastically. And then Gary Sinese saw the play in New York and he wanted to put it on in Chicago. And everybody had their picture taken with me, and I don't recall anyone having their picture taken with Sheldon, outside of his friends. For me, martial arts is just a release. He was just polite. Live from Largo in L.A. they get into Samuel L. Jackson's infamous death scene, LL Cool J's relationship with his bird, Stellan Skarsgrd's new name, and how Saffron Burrows is the film's true villain. A secret martial arts contest? And so, you know, it was just a nice fit. Then he said, "It's my movie too and I want what's best for the film! Because Jean-Claude uses people and chews them up as quick as he can. He took pride in the fact that he was all natural. Commander Alexander Martin available for review. Shortly after running our last piece, How Did This Get Made: A Conversation with Frank Dux, the Real-Life Inspiration for Bloodsport, I was put in touch with Sheldon Lettich. In fact, we explored Post Traumatic Stress in the play, but the term PTSD had not even been coined yet. What was all this camaraderie about? We liked the fact that we were able to do something different there. What follows is the rest of our conversation Blake Harris: Given that you were mentioned several times in my interview with Frank, I can't help but start off by asking how surprised and/or frustrated you were to see the things he said?Sheldon Lettich: Frustrated? By their own photographer. Another thing was that had I co-directed The Quest with Jean-Claude, it might have contributed to a mistaken notion that Jean-Claude co-directed Lionheart and Double Impact with me. How Did This Get Made is a companion to the podcastHow Did This Get MadewithPaul Scheer, Jason MantzoukasandJuneDiane Raphaelwhich focuses on movies. Yet with Bloodsport, this was not the case. The truth. During that time, I gave Jean-Claude some odd jobs. And I had read an article, in this magazine called M, about the French Foreign Legion. In fact, that was the script for Stallone that Jean-Claude gave me some dialogue help with.Blake Harris: Ah, right after Bloodsport. Around this time, Leon Isaac Kennedy [from The White House All Stars] had been in in a Chuck Norris movie called Lone Wolf McQuade and there was talk about doing a Part Two. And regardless of what any critics may say or believe, I don't think anyone would argue that you weren't extremely talented. "We have no recollection of such a tournament," said Kenneth Wilson, a spokesman for the Ministry of Sports in the Bahamas. "Below are some of the key points and accusations made in the piece: Frank Dux: By the way, the L.A. Times won't even defend the article anymore.
